Your Robot Mower Has Never Seen Your Yard

This robot mower has no map, no camera, no GPS — it just drives until something stops it. What keeps it off the street is a single wire buried around the yard: the current in it throws up a weak magnetic field, and the field flips direction at the wire, so the mower always knows inside from outside. Newer mowers swap the wire for satellites, with a yard base station correcting GPS drift to about a centimeter.
